LERIBE

Leribe, headquarters of the Leribe district, was originally named Hlotse after the river that flows along its southern side. It was founded in 1876 and was the centre of a number of engagements during the Gun War of 1880.

The old Anglican Church dates from 1877 and is the oldest building in the town. The Gun Tower, which is now part of the marketplace in Leribe, dates from the time of the Gun War of 1886.
About 8 km north of Hlotse (Leribe), on the old road to Botha-Bothe, the footprints of three- and five-toed dinosaurs can be seen about 400 m downstream from the bridge in the bed of the Subeng River.

The Leribe Craft Centre offers a wide variety of mohair items for sale. There is an interestingdrive from Hlotse (Leribe) to Pitseng at the foot of the Maloti Mountains to the town of Teya-Teyaneng (popularly known as TY), 52 km south of Leribe.

Teya-Teyaneng means “the place of the quicksands”, and is so called because cattle are occasionally trapped in the mud of a nearby river. There are interesting handicraft workshops in the town where grass-work, pottery and angora and mohair items can be purchased.

Mohair carpets can be made to order. In the town itself, the Setsotho Design and Helang Basali Hatoor Mose Mosali are two other handicraft centres worth a visit.

LERIBE GUN TOWER

Entering from the border at Ficksburg, you will find Leribe. The original name for the town was Hlotse, so called after the Hlotse River. It was founded in 1876 and it became embroiled in the Gun War of 1880. Now in ruins, there is a war cemetery in the town.

The old Gun Tower, which is now part of the marketplace in Leribe, was built for the Gun War of 1886. It is believed that Major Bell was responsible for getting the Gun Tower built.  About 8 km north of Leribe, towards Botha-Bothe, the footprints of dinosaurs can be seen in the bed of the Subeng River. The Leribe Craft Centre offers a wide variety of mohair items woven from the hand-spun yarn for sale.
